Ghana Man Fined For Spending Money Mistakenly Credited To His Account by Markito(m) : 3:33 pm |
An Accra Circuit Court has imposed a fine of GH₵ 1,800 on a 21-year-old unemployed man, Felix Kwame Akakpo, for spending GH₵ 17,812 mistakenly credited to his account.
The convict will in default serve a 20-day jail term. Akakpo, who was charged with stealing, pleaded guilty to the crime and was convicted on his own plea. He told the court his family was ready to assist him to refund the money to the bank. He admitted that what he did was wrong, adding that all the people he used the money to assist had abandoned him. In handing the sentence, the court said it considered the accused person's admission of the offence, the fact that he was ready to refund the money and he being a first-time offender. The court further asked him to refund the money to the complainant. The complainant, name withheld, is a banker and works with UBA Bank Ghana Limited in Accra but lives at Spintex in Accra. The Prosecution, led by Police Inspector Clemence Takyi, told the court presided over by Mrs Evelyn Asamoah that on April 26, this year, the complainant, while on duty mistakenly transferred GH₵ 17,812 to Akakpo’s Fidelity bank account number 2100406642414. Inspector Takyi said the complainant upon detecting the error few days later tried to reverse the transfer but was informed that Akakpo had withdrawn the money. The Prosecution said Akakpo was contacted on phone to refund the money but he declined, claiming it was a gift from God. The case was subsequently reported to the police, and he was arrested. Prosecution said during investigations, Akakpo admitted the offence. https://www.graphic.com.gh/lifestyle/man-fined-for-spending-money-mistakenly-credited-to-his-account.html
