Founder and CEO of the Dangote Group Aliko Dangote commands a fortune of $14.3 billion.

There's only one person in all of Africa who makes the list of the 50 richest people on earth: Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote. When our ranking was released, Dangote's net worth stood at $14.3 billion, equal to 2.5% of Nigeria's GDP.


The majority of his wealth stems from a more than 90% stake in Dangote Cement, his $2.4 billion in sales company that's publicly traded on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

Dangote's business interests span several African countries. He owns cement plants in Zambia, Senegal, Tanzania, and South Africa. In 2011, the commodities baron invested $4 billion to build a facility on the Ivory Coast.

Dangote, who has been CEO and president of Dangote Group for 35 years, is also an active philanthropist. As chairman of The Dangote Foundation, he oversees several education, agriculture, and health initiatives, including a $12,000-per-day food program for the undernourished.

"Aliko is Africa’s richest man, and his business activities drive economic growth across the continent. That’s impressive, but I know him best as a leader constantly in search of ways to bridge the gap between private business and public health," wrote Bill Gates, the richest person in the world, of his fellow philanthropist in Time Magazine. The tech mogul also praised Dangote's success in removing Nigeria from the global list of endemic countries in his fight to eradicate polio.

In January, Dangote and Gates announced a $100 million pledge to cut malnutrition in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and leading economy. The pair also signed a deal to enhance immunization programs in the country's Northern states.

Dangote tied for 49th on our ranking of the world's 50 richest people — produced with Wealth-X, a company that conducts research on the superwealthy — and is the only black person to make the list.

The majority or 53% of the over-500 CEOs surveyed in the AGI business barometer for quarter-four of 2015 cited high cost of power as their number-one challenge, followed closely by inadequate supply of the same utility.

The manufacturing and services sectors were particularly concerned about the impact of high cost for power on their businesses.

In terms of business size, small and medium enterprises were more concerned about the high cost of power while ‘large’ firms placed inadequacy of supply ahead of the cost.

Presenting the survey’s results on Tuesday, CEO of the AGI Seth Twum Akwaboah said it is worrying for high cost of power to have come up tops in the quarter-four rankings when it did not even feature in the top-five challenges for the third quarter.

The Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) in December announced hikes in both water and electricity tariffs at a combined rate of 126.4%.

Electricity bills went up by 59.2% while water bills rose 67.2% -- increases which were sharply criticised by both the AGI and organised labour.

Government subsequently reduced the electricity tariff by 15%, although it is to be enjoyed only by ‘lifeline consumers’ or consumers who use 50kwh or less.

To reduce the burden of power tariffs on industry, the AGI says there is a need for re-classifying the various electricity customer categories to help address the “unfair incidence” of industry subsidising residential consumers.

“The current tariff regime whereby Industry subsidises residential power users renders Industry less competitive,” AGI President James Asare Adjei read from a communique issued by the Association’s national council.

Business confidence dips

Confidence in the business environment as measured by the AGI’s business barometer dipped marginally in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The barometer indicator dropped from the third quarter figure of 97.29 to 93.12 in quarter four, a further slip away from the baseline index of 100.

“The indicator is still struggling to keep itself above the baseline. It means the business environment has not been good in the period under review,” said Seth Twum Akwaboah, CEO of the AGI.

The Business Barometer Indicator is the statistical mean of Situation and Expectation and expresses the state of business confidence as an index, with 100 as the base index. It is calculated out of “current” business mood and “expectations” for the future.

While they cited high cost and inadequate supply of electricity, cedi instability and multiplicity of taxes, among others, as major challenges they face, some 58% of the over-500 CEOs surveyed were hopeful that the next quarter will be good.

And to make the next quarter and indeed the whole year good, the AGI cautioned government to “avoid the incidence of slipping in unexpected levies that add to the cost of doing business.”

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo has revealed that his opposition party is less happy with the way and manner at which the Electoral Commission is currently handling electoral reforms ahead of the November 7 elections.

In his interaction to the new Ambassador of the United States of America to Ghana, Robert Porter Jackson, the less enthused flagbearer revealed that Ghana is likely to miss the election date as “there is an air of uncertainty about the whole preparatory process.”



“We continue to be concerned about the way the EC is handling issues ahead of the November 7 election. The procedures and steps being taken for the election appear to be still up in the air. There is an air of uncertainty about the whole preparatory process towards November 7. We in the NPP are not interested in a sham democracy,” Nana Addo revealed.



Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has argued that former head of the Electoral Commission (EC) Dr Afari Djan was far more better than the current one, Charlotte Osei. Two South African children have filed a suit against T.B. Joshua at the Lagos State High Court in Igbo sere, Lagos, over the death of their father.

The two children, Bulungu and Nora, three and six years old respectively, are looking for at least $520,000 (£370,000) in damages, per court papers quoted in the Nigerian media. The compensation they are seeking is calculated as the cost of expenses their father, Kalambaie Wa Kalambaie, would have made on them from his death till the day he would have turned 70

Their father was among 116 people killed when a hostel owned by the Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN) collapsed in Lagos in 2014.

According to their lawyer, Bolaji Ayorinde, he has had a lot of inquiries from relatives of people who died in the building collapse about the possibility of taking legal action

The BBC reports that; “A coroner ruled last year that TB Joshua should be prosecuted over the collapse of the building, saying the church was culpable because of criminal negligence.

Although the engineers of the building are facing criminal charges, no charges have been leveled against the church or T.B Joshua.

“The pastor and church have consistently denied any wrongdoing.”

Prophet TB Joshua is the founder of the Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN). He blamed the 2014 incident on a strange aircraft “hovering” above the building which was a multi-storey guesthouse in a Lagos compound belonging to the church shortly before it collapsed

“We adopted Christianity from the West, yet you don’t hear of evil prophecies like fire outbreaks from there. But it is Ghana that suffers such negative prophecies, because some pastors have gone for black magic. “If you are a pastor and you say God has revealed there will be fires, why not pray against it?” the fetish priest questioned.

He further stated that most contemporary Christian ministers are less concerned with saving souls, rather seeking personal glory before men. He told the host: “For majority of the pastors, it’s the money and fame they are after – big cars for themselves and their wives –
and making evil prophecies. Because that makes them popular before men; they are less interested in doing what pleases God.

Nana Appiah asked pastors to “make good prophecies so good things happen in the land in order that all the panicking stop”.

He revealed that a lot of pastors had consulted him for voodoo and passed it off as divine powers, saying he would soon release an audio recording, naming and shaming those pastors involved. Nana Appiah added he had quit offering spiritual support for pastors, as he did not want to play a role in leading Christians into deception.

“Today, because Bibles are cheap, anyone goes to buy a Bible and comes to me. Henceforth, I will sell no black magic to anyone,” the traditional priest declared.

Awele Nwani a 25-year-old housewife in Ibusa, Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State has bathed her husband Frank Nwani with hot water, for allegedly denying her of s*x for three weeks.
