Sarkodie joins a list of other powerful African artists including Akon (Senegalese-American), Wizkid (Nigerian), Davido (Nigerian), Black Coffee from South Africa, Don Jazzy (Nigeria), Oliver Mtukudzi, (Zimbabwean), Jidenna (Nigerian-American), Hugh Masakela (South African) and Tinashe (Zimbabwe – American).

Read what was said of the top 10 musicians from Africa by Forbes Africa.

1. AKON

With over 35 million albums sold worldwide, numerous awards, five Grammy Award nominations, 45 Billboard Hot 100 songs under his belt and over 51 million likes on his Facebook page, Akon.

2. BLACK COFFEE, SOUTH AFRICA

Black Coffee, real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo, has not only raised the bar for South African house music, but has put it on the world map. The multi-award-winning artist was born in South Africa’s house music province, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), raised in the Eastern Cape province, where struggle stalwart Nelson Mandela hailed from, before moving back to KZN to study music. It was worth it.

3. HUGH MASEKELA, SOUTH AFRICA

Born in Witbank, east of Johannesburg, Hugh Masekela is committed to restoring African heritage. This world-renowned flugelhornist, trumpeter, bandleader, composer and singer has released more than 43 albums and performed with Marvin Gaye, Dizzy Gillespie, The Byrds, Fela Kuti, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and Miriam Makeba. “The music I make, I don’t call it my music. 6. JIDENNA, NIGERIAN-AMERICAN

The single Back When planted him firmly in the music business in 2011. “It was people like [Nigerian music veterans] P-Square and D’Banj who made me believe that all this was possible,” he recalls. Dami Duro, an unexpected hit, leaked online almost a year prior to its official release, became the crown jewel for his widely acclaimed 2012 debut album, Omo Baba Olowo.

9. SARKODIE, GHANA

Born Michael Owusu Addo, Sarkodie has racked up millions of views on YouTube for his music with his debut album and first single, Baby, among the favorites.

He started out as an underground rapper which helped him cross paths with his former manager, Duncan Williams, who helped launch his career. Staying true to his identity, he is a big advocate of Azonto, a Ghanaian genre that is said to have been born out of Kpanlogo, a traditional dance.

Mewu, the first single off his fourth album, Mary, sold almost 4,000 copies on the first day of its release in Ghana’s capital Accra. His hard work does not go unnoticed. Sarkodie was the first Ghanaian to win a BET award and has the most nominations.

In 2015, he was ranked the 19th “Most Influential Ghanaian” by e-TV Ghana and in 2013 and 2015, he was ranked 8th on FORBES and Channel O’s list, “Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artists.”

His ambitions don’t end here. In 2013, he launched his clothing line Sark by Yas, launched Obidi Chief Headphones which endorses, among others, Samsung and telecommunications company, Tigo.

In 2014, he also launched the music label SarkCess to empower other African artists. 2017 promises to be an even more exciting year for Sarkodie.

Leaks/ Sanitation authority needed to enforce laws – ESPA by Abigali(f) : 9:49 pm On May 07

The Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA) believes that Ghana‘s sanitation problems can best be addressed when the government takes serious steps to enforce the country’s sanitation by-laws.

It said there is the need for the creation of a sanitation authority to coordinate efforts of all sanitation stakeholders to ensure that the cities are clean.

The Executive Secretary of ESPA, Ama Ofori-Antwi in an interview on Eyewitness News on Friday expressed fear that there would be a duplication of roles by some government ministries and departments such as the Ministry for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Ministry for Sanitation and Water resources as well as the Local Government Ministry if the authority is not created.

“What I will recommend to the government is a sanitation authority, because what is happening now is that we have a lot of duplication. We have Local Government ministry, MESTI and now Sanitation and Water resource ministry….[We need] the authority so that everything on sanitation goes through the authority to ensure that we have the city clean, which can be done.”

Ama Ofori-Antwi said although the government has expressed some political will and commitment to addressing the issue of filth especially in the capital, Accra.

Series of news reports gathered by Citi News in the last week shows that there is a worsening sanitation crisis in the capital with city authorities struggling to deal with the situation.

Sections of major roads in the capital have been taken over by filth, usually dumped there by residents in nearby areas.

The problem reveals an apparent inability of the relevant bodies to effectively manage waste generated in the capital especially those generated domestically.

But the Executive Secretary of ESPA says Ghanaians need to be oriented to change their attitudes with regards to managing their waste while enforcement agencies are deployed to ensure that they comply with the laid down sanitation laws.

“I think Attitude is one key thing that needs to be addressed… It is about time our laws are enforced. We need an enforcement of the sanitation bylaws. If the laws were being enforced, we wouldn’t be where we are. It is a very complicated thing that needs a holistic approach in solving it.”

Sports/ Jeffrey Schlupp struggles in unfamiliar centre-back role as Crystal Palace get thumped by Man City by Abigali(f) : 1:34 am On May 08

Ghana international Jeffrey Schlupp was far off his best in Crystal Palace’s 5-0 drubbing at Manchester City on Saturday in the English Premier League.

Due to Palace’s defensive injury crisis Schlupp was asked to play on the left of a back-three at first and then at centre-back alongside Kelly in a back-four and it was clear why he had never played there before in his career.

He made a vital clearance to deny Gabriel Jesus making in 2-0 after 20 minutes but struggled for a lot of the game.

Manager Sam Allardyce’s decision to play him in that unfamiliar role as centre-back backfired big time.

Schlupp joined the Eagles from Leicester City during the January transfer window and has made 13 appearances.

Leaks/ VIDEO:I predicted Emmanuel Macron’s victory- T B Joshua by Abigali(f) : 8:34 pm On May 08

Nigerian Pastor, televangelist and philanthropist   Prophet T.B. Joshua says he predicted victory for Emmanuel Macron in the just ended French election hours before the official announcements were made

During a live television broadcast during church service at his Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN) on Sunday May 7, 2017,  he believed   Macron’s victory was connected to his considerate stance on immigrants and refugees.

“It is prayer that will put him there, not anything – because of his heart for refugees and immigrants,” “We are praying for him and our prayer will answer,” he authoritatively declared. “I am not a politician but I pray every day for Emmanuel Macron because of what he believes,” the cleric proceeded.

“We know there are some bad people among the refugees – but we cannot say because there are some bad people that we reject all of them,” he counseled.

Emmanuel Macron on Sunday won the French presidency in a decisive victory over the far-right Front National leader, Marine Le Pen, and vowed to unite a divided and fractured France.

Macron, 39, a former economy minister run as a “neither left nor right” independent took 66% to Le Pen’s 34%.

His victory has been hailed by his supporters as holding back a tide of populism after the Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s victory in the US election.

Leaks/ Salma Mumin named ambassador for L.A – based PH8 FOUNDATION by Abigali(f) : 8:34 pm On May 08

Ghanaian actress and movie producer Salma Mumin has been signed as the official Ambassador for Los Angeles – based The Ph8 Foundation.

An official document signed by Mike Angel (CEO & Founder of the foundation) submits: “Salma Mumin has proved herself a worthy trustee to expand our mission further in Ghana.”

The PH8 Foundation believes that Clean Water, Healthy Food, Quality Healthcare and an Enriching Education are not just basic necessities; they are human rights which everyone in the world can and must have access to.

In 2016, they curated a party dubbed “Go for Ghana”, raising enough money to complete 5 projects in Ghana. One of the projects was building a computer lab with 14 laptops at a school called God’s Gift Academy in James Town, the foundation also provided the whole Academy with brand new school supplies.

They also stopped by James Town, Marie Louise Children’s hospital to provide the whole hospital with supplies, food, toys for the children. Another place they went to visit was the Rehabilitation center to provide the challenged supplies. One of the biggest accomplishments was Confidence Complex Coins, is a children’s school in the village of Lamletse in Kumasi. There are close to 600 people who live in this area, without access to clean sustainable water.

The men, women, and children, retrieve water from a local well, but that well is only 15-20 meters deep, meaning that the water not only runs out quickly but is also of a lower quality. It becomes a first come first serve basis.

The majority of Ghanaians in that locality are then forced to walk more than two miles in the scorching heat, in order to fetch water from local river bodies, which are far below safe drinking standards.

Now the children all have access to clean, safe drinking water and can focus on school rather than spend countless hours walking miles and taking a chance on drinking contaminated water.

The Ghanaian actress/producer who has featured in many movies after she joined the Ghana movie industry in back 2007, is yet to premier her latest movie “No man’s Land”.

Other works from the actress include Seduction, No Apology, Passion and Soul, College Girls, Leave my Wife, The Will among others.

Salma will soon embark on a number of workshops to raise funds for future projects of the foundation.

Leaks/ Otiko has ‘locked up sick husband’ and starving him – Bugri Naabu by Abigali(f) : 4:12 am On May 09

Eccentric Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)Daniel Bugri Naabu claims Gender Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba, has locked up her sick husband and refused to give him food.

According to Bugri Naabu, though a married woman, Otiko has refused to use her husband’s name or the ‘Mrs’ title in her undertakings and continues to treat him inhumanely.

An angry Gender Minister Otiko Afisa Djaba has alleged that Mr Naabu has been taking bribes and promising people appointments.

I want him to stop telling lies about me and to stop collecting people’s things and promising them jobs he cannot give. When he goes and does that, after he has collected their money and their cows and goats, then he will come and put the trouble on Otiko. Otiko will not accept it. If Bugri wants trouble from me then the trouble will come,” Otiko spewed.

But the controversial Chairman in an interview with Accra based Radio XYZ on Monday responded to the allegation, descending heavily on Otiko whom she described as an irresponsible woman.

“… A woman who is married, the husband is a doctor, she is supposed to be called Mrs Tapan but nobody knows that Otiko is married. Whatever she does, she does it without any ‘Mrs’. The husband is sick, she has locked the husband in the house. She doesn’t give him food to eat, the man’s children are angry [and want] to go and prepare food for their father. So such a woman, is she responsible? In Tamale here everybody knows.”

Background

The outspoken Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP on Friday lost his temper and disrupted a meeting that was underway led by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Otiko Afisa Djaba.

The controversial chairman in the company of some unruly women affiliated to the NPP stormed the meeting vandalizing properties in protest to what he described as the Minister’s disregard for his high office claiming she did not seek his consent before convening her meeting.

Mr. Naabu who described the meeting as “illegal” noted that the Gender Minister has no right to come to the region to organize a meeting without first informing the regional executives, saying that even the president would not throw his weight about in such manner.

I have told the Minister point blank what she did was wrong. It is unconstitutional and therefore her meeting is illegal,” he declared to the admiration of the women accompanying him.

On the other side, the Gender  Minister, Otiko Djaba who is livid about Chairman’s Naabu boisterous bahviour accused Bugri Naabu of handing out government jobs in exchange for items such as cows and goats.

She’s urged the leadership of the party to relieve Bugri Naabu, of his position following his act of lawlessness that has brought shame to the party.
